Baltic Analog Lab invites to a creative workshop led by Spanish artist Luis Macías focused on experimentation with 35 mm slides and their projection

device, which will conclude with a collective performance.

Over two day workshop we will explore the various possibilities of the carousel projector as an instrument and question the conception of the slide as a strictly fixed or static image. We will learn to modify the projector using different DIY elements (motors, shutters, optics), as well as the multiple possibilities of physical and plastic alteration and manipulation of the still image of the slides.

During the workshop we will also put into practice different image creation techniques, which will be used during the projection in a collective improvisation exercise.

Program:

Day 1: Theory and practical introduction

Possibilities of the image: the slide as a canvas, the catalogue of frames, the masks, the time of projection or contemplation

Projector possibilities: light, focus, carousel, time, loops , direction

Original accessories: lenses, timer, solutions, programming

DIY technological modifications : internal and external on the projector

Practice I:  creation of images with different techniques: taking pictures with a 35mm camera, copying, multi-exposure, bipack, collage, etc.

Day 2: Image Creation

Practice II: further study of image creation: flat print, rayograms, etc. Development and other techniques for intervening in images in the laboratory.

Practice III: Projection techniques: experimentation through the use of various projectors, multiple exposure (in the image, in the frame, in the projection), masks, filters, shutters and optics.

Final practice: the slide projector as an instrument. Collective performative projection.

Luis Macias (1976, Barcelona, Spain.) Is an artist, filmmaker and image composer. His pieces deal with the formal and spectral properties of the moving image, through the exploration of the cinematographic device itself and the photochemical nature of the medium. Focused on experimental and procedural practices of analog image, his works in Super 8,16mm, 35mm and / or video format are composed for projection, performance or installation. His films and pieces of expanded cinema have been shown in prestigious film, art and music festivals as well as art centers, museums and alternative spaces around the world. He is also a co-founder and an active member of Crater-Lab, an independent laboratory for analog cinema, and alternates his art work with specialized teaching in experimental cinema and the exploration of analog formats.

This workshop is aimed at anyone interested in experimental film and photography, and especially at artists and filmmakers who want to enrich their creative processes.
