WORKSHOP
Baltic Analog Lab
Color photograms
23 March, 2025
with Sonia Rosa Kahn
Baltic Analog Lab invites you to a one day workshop led by American artist Sonia Rosa Kahn focused on experimentation with color photograms on 35mm and 16mm print film.
During this workshop we will explore the methods of printing objects directly onto filmstock without use of a camera. Participants are encouraged to bring items from home and there are endless possibilities, including but not limited to: spices, lace, sparkles, color gels, prisms, photo negatives, and plants. There will be the option of working on either 35mm stock to make photo slides for interactive carousel projection or 16mm to explore these objects in motion and make loops for expanded cinema. The aim of this workshop is to learn about alternative means of making colour prints and exploring photograms beyond the traditional means on photo-sensitive paper. Participants will also get an introduction into hand-processing color stock.
Photograms (aka reyograms) is a historic cameraless photographic process that does not require use of a camera and exposes objects on a photo sensitive surface. It was mostly used and known by Man Ray who developed series of cameraless work which he called “reyogram”.
Whilst Man Ray’s technique uses mainly black and white process, we will apply the method by using colour film and colour chemistry.
This workshop is aimed at anyone interested in experimental photography and film.
Overview:
Participants introduced to the history and theory of photograms and DIY contact printing.
Overview of color theory and light spectrum
Hand-developing color print stock using ECP
Projection possibilities with collaged 35mm slides and 16mm loops.
Sonia Rosa Kahn is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City.
