SPECTRAL Expanded

Artists-run film collective Baltic Analog Lab from Riga Latvia in collaboration with AVANT event and Fylkingen presents expanded cinema performance evening “SPECTRAL Expanded” with three international artists presenting three audio-visual works using analog projectors and sound.


SPECTRAL Expanded is series of events happening during year 2022-2025 in various placesof Northern and Central Europe within framework of SPECTRAL project that unites six artistrun analog film laboratories of Europe and aims to provide a platform for creation, presentation and research of expanded cinema art practice.


In this event Baltic Analog Lab presents two artists from Mexico - Azucena Losana and Elena Pardo with their performance that was created during SPECTRAL residency in Crater Lab in Barcelona which will be followed by two performances by Luis Macias from Spain.


Programme

"The eyes empty and the pupils burning of rage and desire” by Luis Macias (ES) 

2 x 16mm projectors / 25 min / silent / colour 

Performance begins with the absence of an image that is its own destruction and builds a particular organic universe that is slowly emerging from a relation of excitement and love between the emulsion and the projector.


"Spectral Landscape" by Luis Macias (ES)

3 x 35mm slide projectors / 25 min / silent / colour-bw

It is an intermittent, subtle and violent performance with several modified slide projectors that explores the image of nature and how it is revealed to us.


"NANACATEPEC" by Azucena Losana and Elena Pardo (MX)

3 x 16mm film projectors / 45 min/ sound/ colour-BW 

The Nanacatepec rock is traversed by a network that extends without a defined shape. It communicates both below and above the earth with living and dead beings. Its fruits, in the form of mushrooms, are creators and transformers of everything in the world. Artist’s Biographies Luis Macias (1976, Barcelona, Spain.) Is an artist, filmmaker and image composer. His pieces deal with the formal and spectral properties of the moving image, through the exploration of the cinematographic device itself and the photochemical nature of the medium. Focused on experimental and procedural practices of analog image, his works in Super 8,16mm, 35mm and / or video format are composed for projection, performance or installation. His films and pieces of expanded cinema have been shown in prestigious film, art and music festivals as well as art centers, museums and alternative spaces around the world. He is also a co-founder and an active member of Crater-Lab, an independent laboratory for analog cinema, and alternates his art work with specialized teaching in experimental cinema and the exploration of analog formats.


Azucena Losana is born in Mexico City, 1977. Lives and works in Mexico City and Buenos Aires. Her work is related to experimental films, installations and video. She has a Degree in Multimedia Arts from the National Arts University in Argentina in addition to having completed the Diploma in Audiovisual Preservation and Restoration given by the Cinemateca and Archivo de la Imagen Nacional de Argentina (CINAIN) and the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She has attended Claudio Caldini's experimental film workshop and participated the Flaherty Film Seminar in 2021. Currently an active member of LEC collective in Mexico, but also has worked with the groups Trinchera Ensamble and Circuito CiN!CO and DNI in Argentina.


Elena Pardo is a maker, explorer, and advocate of the moving image. Her cinematic work spans documentary, animation, installation, and live performance. She recently completed Pulsos Subterráneos [“Underground Pulses”], an expanded cinema and web documentary project funded with support from the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte / FONCA. She

is co-founder of the Laboratorio Experimental de Cine (LEC), an artist-run project begun in 2013 and designed to build a community of filmmakers and audiences interested in experimental film through production, training, and film screenings. Elena is a collaborator in training programs for the Campamento Audiovisual Itinerante and JEQO (a women’s film school),  where she shares knowledge and tools relating to audiovisual creation with youth and diverse communities across Mexico.


Event is happening with the support of Creative Europe’s funded project SPECTRAL, Latvian Ministry of Culture, Institut Ramon Llull, curated by Baltic Analog Lab.
